Joe Root acknowledges that some England players are learning on the job in 50-over cricket due to a lack of format exposure. The domestic One-Day Cup now overlaps with The Hundred, making it a developmental competition. England's top six batters in a recent match had significantly fewer List A caps than their Indian counterparts.

Root stated, "Anyone coming into this team does not have the wealth of experience and understanding of 50-over cricket because we are not exposed to it any more." He emphasized the need for players to adapt and learn quickly, drawing parallels to his own 99 in tricky conditions during a recent ODI win. Root highlighted the importance of strike rotation and punishing loose balls, contrasting it with the aggressive style of the 2019 World Cup squad.

England has struggled in ODIs recently, currently eighth in the world rankings and needing to secure automatic World Cup qualification. Root expressed hope that the team's recent adaptability in different conditions, despite initial struggles, indicates progress. He believes this new group can still achieve success, drawing inspiration from the build-up to the 2019 World Cup victory.
