EFL Championship Play-Offs Expansion Vote Set for March

EFL clubs will vote on 5 March to expand the Championship play-offs from four to six teams. The proposal, approved by the EFL board and FA, would see clubs finishing third through eighth compete for the final Premier League promotion spot, mirroring the National League format. Third and fourth would advance directly to the semi-finals.

The change requires a majority vote from all 72 EFL clubs (at least 37) and a separate majority from the 24 Championship clubs (at least 13). The Championship holds a "master share" on regulation changes, giving its clubs decisive influence. Supporters argue it offers greater opportunity for clubs without substantial parachute payments to reach the Premier League.

If passed, the new system starts in the 2026-27 season. The EFL will also discuss changing promotion/relegation between League Two and the National League to three up, three down, though no vote is scheduled. The current play-off final at Wembley in May would remain, but the path to it would involve an additional quarter-final round of one-legged ties.
