Chelsea have agreed a £7.5m fee with Aston Villa for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The Argentina international, 33, is set for a medical in London as the Blues look to strengthen their goalkeeping options.

The move follows concerns over Robert Sanchez's form, especially after errors in the 3-2 win over Fulham. Sanchez, first-choice since 2023, has faced criticism after letting a Josh King shot slip and spilling another effort.

Martinez's arrival marks a shift in Chelsea's stance, as they had previously backed Sanchez. The deal comes just days before the transfer deadline. Chelsea also have Mike Penders, a £17m signing from Genk, as another option.

Villa were willing to sell Martinez after signing Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma for about £30m. This is the latest in a series of deals between the clubs, including forward Morgan Rogers' £117m move and a loan for Alejandro Garnacho. Nicolas Jackson, valued at £65m, was also completing a medical at Villa Park.
