BBC and ITV World Cup 2026 Broadcast Selection Process Revealed

British football fans will watch the 2026 World Cup through familiar channels, but the match allocation process between BBC and ITV involves strategic negotiations behind the scenes. Executive producer Phil Bigwood explains that the two broadcasters take turns having first pick, with BBC selecting first this time around after the December draw.

The system works like a draft: BBC chooses one match, then ITV responds, continuing back and forth until all 91 picks are distributed. Each broadcaster gets roughly 10 minutes per selection, though the process can extend for hours. Both networks share coverage of the final match, ensuring free-to-air access for major tournament moments.

Priority considerations include home nations games and knockout stage fixtures, but scheduling conflicts complicate decisions. BBC must account for events like Wimbledon, while ITV weighs commercial factors. With matches spread across USA, Canada and Mexico featuring 13 different kick-off times, avoiding multiple live games on single days requires careful planning.

The knockout round presents particular challenges since opponents remain unknown during selection. Bigwood notes that broadcasters rely partly on guesswork, citing how an early-morning Amazon fixture unexpectedly became England v Italy. Once picks finalize, both teams tackle extensive logistics including travel, accommodation and production requirements for coverage across three host nations.
