Sarri Departs Lazio After One-Year Spell Following Poor Season

Maurizio Sarri has left Lazio by mutual consent after just one year in charge, ending his second stint as head coach. The 67-year-old former Chelsea manager returned last summer but failed to replicate his earlier success with the Serie A side. Lazio finished ninth in the league and lost 2-0 to Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia final.

Sarri initially took charge in June 2021 and guided Lazio to second place in the 2022-23 season - their best league finish since the 1999-2000 title-winning campaign. However, he resigned less than a year later following a fifth defeat in six games across all competitions. His second spell proved disappointing, with the club missing out on European qualification.

Italian media reports suggest Sarri will soon take over at Atalanta, whose current coach is Raffaele Palladino. Former Italy manager Gennaro Gattuso emerges as the frontrunner to succeed Sarri at Lazio. The club posted a farewell video on social media with the caption 'Thank you for everything, Commander,' acknowledging his contributions during both tenures.

Sarri's departure marks another chapter in Lazio's turbulent managerial history, with the club now seeking stability after failing to challenge for major honors. His potential move to Atalanta would see him return to coaching in Italy's top flight.
