Lille have confirmed Davide Ancelotti as their new head coach on a two-year contract, marking his first senior managerial position in Europe. The 36-year-old Italian arrives after working as an assistant to his father, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, during this summer's World Cup preparations. He brings experience from stints alongside his father at Napoli, Bayern Munich, Everton and Real Madrid, having begun his coaching journey in 2016.

Ancelotti previously managed Brazilian side Botafogo from July to December last year, though his tenure ended abruptly when he was dismissed following a sixth-place finish in the league and elimination from the Copa Libertadores by Ecuador's LDU Quito. Despite that setback, Lille identified him as the right candidate to replace Bruno Genesio, who departed after the club secured Champions League qualification for the 2025-26 campaign.

Genesio guided Lille to fifth place in 2024-25 before achieving a third-place finish this season, ensuring the club's return to Europe's premier competition. Ancelotti faces the immediate challenge of maintaining that momentum while building his own identity separate from his legendary father's shadow. The appointment represents a calculated gamble by Lille's hierarchy, betting on youthful energy and international experience to sustain their upward trajectory.

His immediate focus will be integrating into pre-season preparations while deciding whether to retain his Brazil assistant role alongside his father. The younger Ancelotti acknowledged the responsibility ahead, describing Lille as a 'serious, ambitious, competitive club' capable of regular European participation.
