Verstappen's Retirement Doubts Amid F1 Rule Changes

Max Verstappen is experiencing conflicting thoughts about his Formula 1 future, admitting he doesn't want to leave but is finding more enjoyment in endurance racing. The four-time world champion has criticized F1's 2026 regulation overhaul as "anti-racing" and "Formula E on steroids," expressing concern about increased battery reliance.

Verstappen's current contract runs through 2028, but he's already exploring other racing opportunities. He's set to compete in the Nurburgring 24 Hours in May with Mercedes AMG GT3, owns a team in GT World Challenge Europe, and hopes to tackle iconic endurance events like Spa and Le Mans. The 28-year-old describes these ventures as "positive distractions" that conflict with his diminishing enjoyment of F1 cars.

Despite his reservations, Verstappen emphasizes he doesn't want to leave Formula 1 and is engaged in discussions with F1 and the FIA to improve the sport. He's stated he won't race into his 40s like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, preferring to explore other opportunities now rather than later in his career. With his father Jos having won the 2008 Le Mans Series LMP2 title, Verstappen sees endurance racing as a natural extension of his motorsport ambitions.
