Max Verstappen has warned that Formula 1's 2026 regulations will make the sport significantly harder for fans to follow. The four-time world champion expressed concerns that the new rules, emphasizing energy management, will complicate race understanding for casual viewers. Verstappen made these comments during Viaplay's media day, where he addressed questions about the upcoming technical changes.

F1's popularity has surged recently, partly due to the Brad Pitt movie and Netflix's Drive to Survive series. However, Verstappen argues that the 2026 changes, which focus heavily on battery deployment and energy efficiency, could alienate fans who enjoy the current racing format. The Red Bull driver specifically mentioned that overtaking and defending will become more complex with the new energy management systems.

Verstappen emphasized that his concerns aren't about adapting to new driving styles but about whether the changes will make racing more enjoyable. He stated that even if Red Bull dominates the upcoming season, his opinion won't change. The Dutch driver suggested that the new regulations did little to encourage him to extend his F1 career, though he hopes to remain in the sport for the long term.
