Max Verstappen emerged as Formula 1's harshest critic of the 2026 regulations during the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix. The four-time world champion labeled the new ruleset as "anti-racing" and like "Formula E on steroids" due to increased electrical energy reliance. His concerns predated Red Bull's early struggles, showing his skepticism was independent of championship position.

Verstappen specifically warned about drivers downshifting on straights and coasting into corners to harvest energy. He predicted the regulations would create an "ICE competition" where manufacturers would engage in expensive development wars for horsepower. The Dutch driver also expressed concerns about active aerodynamics systems controlling aspects of the car rather than drivers themselves.

Some of Verstappen's fears have materialized, with drivers already employing energy management strategies that create artificial wheel-to-wheel battles. Mercedes' Toto Wolff countered that Red Bull's criticism stemmed from their upcoming role as power unit manufacturers. Wolff suggested the regulations were a compromise that allowed Audi to join and Honda to stay in the sport.

The reality of 2026 differs from Verstappen's predictions, particularly regarding weight which has decreased to 768kg rather than increasing as he expected. While active aerodynamics remain driver-controlled, his core concerns about Formula 1's technical evolution proved prescient, highlighting his consistent vision for how racing should be conducted.
