Max Verstappen's open criticism of the 2026 Formula 1 ruleset has created fresh tension at Red Bull Racing. The four-time world champion recently compared the new regulations unfavorably to Formula E, raising concerns about his future commitment to the sport. This follows a period last season when Verstappen appeared to lose interest in F1 entirely, engaging in sim racing and sportscar events while Red Bull struggled.

Red Bull's technical director Pierre Wache acknowledged the challenge but emphasized that winning races remains the only solution. The team cannot influence the regulatory framework, which falls under FIA jurisdiction, but can focus on building competitive cars. Wache stated that making Verstappen happy about energy management and slower cornering speeds is beyond their control, but providing a front-running package is not.

Currently, Red Bull appears to be the fourth-fastest team based on early testing analysis, trailing Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren. The team has been cautious about revealing its true pace, as have most competitors except Aston Martin. While Mercedes claims its power unit technology provides an edge in sustained energy deployment, Red Bull downplays these assertions.
