Red Bull Ford Powertrains Leads F1 Engine Rankings as Mercedes and Ferrari Receive Development Tokens

Lewis Hamilton inadvertently revealed the FIA's latest engine performance rankings, confirming that Red Bull Ford Powertrains sits atop the V6 combustion hierarchy. The seven-time champion's comments after Monaco suggest Mercedes holds second place, with Ferrari trailing in third.

Following standard post-race analysis at the Canadian Grand Prix, the governing body assessed all power units under the Alternative Definition of Acceptable Uniqueness of Outputs system. Teams falling behind the benchmark receive additional development tokens: Mercedes qualifies for one token, while Ferrari earns two due to larger performance gaps.

The token allocation provides extra dyno hours and cost cap flexibility, allowing manufacturers to work outside normal regulatory constraints. However, Hamilton emphasized this isn't instant salvation, estimating an eight-to-ten month timeline to meaningfully close the deficit.

Originally designed to prevent dominant gaps like Honda's 2017 struggles, ADUO has created political tension instead. While Mercedes and Ferrari gain development opportunities, the system's effectiveness remains questionable given the lengthy implementation required.
