Mercedes Scrutinises Legal Avenues After Gasly Penalty Overturn

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said the team is reviewing legal options after the FIA stewards overturned Pierre Gasly’s pit‑lane speeding penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix. Gasly was one of five drivers affected, and his Alpine team requested a right of review that restored him to third place.

The penalty error cost Mercedes’ George Russell a drive‑through after he failed to serve his five‑second penalty, dropping him from the top ten and widening his title gap to teammate Kimi Antonelli to 68 points. Russell’s loss also knocked Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri down the order.

Wolff ruled out appealing Gasly’s reinstatement but said the team is probing the FIA’s response to Russell’s penalty. He called the pit‑lane timing glitch a “very unfortunate situation” and urged that FOM review its procedures to prevent a repeat, noting the issue was flagged before the race.

With no avenue to unwind Russell’s drive‑through, Mercedes faces a 68‑point deficit that hurts his podium chances. The incident highlights the fragility of race‑day regulations and the need for precise timing systems, as other teams like McLaren and Red Bull have already signalled intent to appeal the stewards’ verdict.
