Gasly’s Monaco podium restored after pit‑lane timing error

After a Thursday hearing, FIA stewards accepted Alpine’s appeal and erased Pierre Gasly’s two five‑second pit‑lane speeding penalties from the Monaco Grand Prix. The French driver, who had crossed the line in third before the sanctions, was restored to the podium, moving back ahead of Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, who falls to fourth. The decision also restores Alpine’s standing in the championship battle.

FOM timekeepers revealed the pit‑lane speed calculation relied on an incorrect distance between the first two timing loops. The zone was measured at 26.92 m instead of the actual 26.15 m, inflating average speeds and triggering false violations. The error arose after barrier changes shortened the loop distance. Post‑event scans supplied the corrected figure, which the stewards cited as decisive proof that Gasly never exceeded the 60 km/h limit.

Alpine recovers the drivers’ and constructors’ points lost after the original classification, while Hadjar’s podium finish is stripped. Other affected drivers—including Lewis Hamilton and George Russell—served penalties during the race and cannot appeal, leaving their results unchanged. Alpine’s appeal also secures a refunded deposit tied to the revised result. The episode highlights a rare procedural reversal in F1, confirming Gasly’s rightful third place.
