Alpine's Appeal Restores Gasly to Monaco Podium After Pit‑Lane Penalty Review

Pierre Gasly returned to third place in Monaco after Alpine won an appeal that overturned his five‑second penalty for pit‑lane speeding. The Frenchman had been dropped to seventh when stewards cited a 0.1km/h breach of the 60km/h limit. Alpine’s review proved the calculated distance was wrong, restoring Gasly’s podium.

Alpine’s legal team highlighted that the pit lane’s shortest route is 77 centimetres shorter than the distance used by officials, meaning the 0.1km/h figure was a miscalculation. Five drivers were penalised for the same offence, a rare spike that led stewards to question the measurement protocol. The decision was backed by timing‑loop data.

George Russell, who lost his third‑place finish after a drive‑through for the same infraction, fell to 13th. Other penalised drivers included McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and teammate Franco Colapinto. Hamilton’s penalty was served during a safety‑car, sparing him a position loss, while Piastri dropped three spots.

The ruling underscores the importance of accurate pit‑lane measurements and could prompt Formula One to revise its timing loops. Alpine’s victory restores confidence in its technical team and keeps Gasly in contention for the championship. The incident also highlighted inconsistencies that may affect teams’ strategic decisions in future races.
