George Russell topped opening practice at the Spanish Grand Prix, setting a fastest time of 1m16.363s to edge out McLaren's Oscar Piastri by just two tenths of a second. The Mercedes driver found consistency on the medium compound tyres, while Piastri demonstrated strong pace despite running the same rubber. Charles Leclerc completed the top three, 0.520s adrift, showcasing Ferrari's upgraded SF-26 package.

Max Verstappen finished fourth after complaining about his Red Bull's unpredictable handling balance between understeer and oversteer. Standing in for Lando Norris, rookie Leonardo Fornaroli impressed in fifth place, making him the top-performing newcomer on his maiden F1 weekend. Paul Aron took sixth for Audi, while Dino Beganovic drove Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari to eighth position.

Colton Herta received his first FP1 outing with Cadillac as the American prepares for a potential F1 future, finishing 21st after Williams reserve Luke Browning failed to run due to suspected electrical issues. Franco Colapinto rounded out the top 10 for Alpine. The session served as a valuable testing ground for teams to evaluate upgrades and give rookies crucial circuit experience ahead of the championship battle intensifying.

Russell's performance suggests Mercedes remain competitive at Barcelona, while Ferrari's upgrades appear to have closed the gap to the front-runners. Piastri's strong showing indicates McLaren's consistency continues, setting up an intriguing qualifying battle between the championship contenders.
