Team principal Andrea Stella told a select media gathering at the Woking factory that the car arriving for the Miami Grand Prix will be a ‘new’ MCL40. He stressed the package focuses on aerodynamic upgrades tailored to the North American circuits, aiming to match rivals’ development cycles. Stella added the altered calendar gave everyone a brief window to streamline upgrades.

McLaren’s 2023 and 2024 seasons showed how early‑season upgrades can reshape performance, a template the team hopes to repeat. While the monocoque and hard points stay homologated, new floor, side‑pod and suspension geometry are expected for Miami, mirroring the Azerbaijan revamp that delivered a competitive showing in Japan. Chief technical officer Rob Marshall warned copying rivals works only when the underlying understanding is replicated.

Ultimately, the Miami-spec MCL40 will be judged on how much additional downforce it can generate without compromising ride‑height limits or brake‑by‑wire efficiency. McLaren believes the package puts them on a level playing field with Mercedes and Ferrari, who currently enjoy superior aerodynamic efficiency. The race will therefore serve as a direct performance audit for all contenders.
