Mercedes Floor Design Revealed After Russell's Spa Retirement

The last thing an F1 aerodynamicist wants is their car dangling from a crane, exposing the floor that generates most downforce. George Russell's retirement at Spa-Francorchamps offered a rare view of the Mercedes underbody, revealing how top teams construct floors under current regulations.

Similar exposure occurred when Sergio Perez crashed at Monaco in 2023, giving rivals insight into the dominant Red Bull RB19. The Mercedes floor shows key elements: diffuser, kick line, plank, outer edge, diffuser strakes, and a new "hole" explored this year to feed the entire diffuser. The FIA required Mercedes to reduce diffuser tab sizes.

Outer diffuser components carry over from last year's brake duct winglets, while reduced sensitivity allows the diffuser hole to expand underbody airflow. Slots ahead of the rear tyre manage "tyre squirt" – turbulent flow squeezed sideways by rotating tyres. These components link aerodynamically with the rear wing for consistent rear downforce.

Flow separation remains a challenge given floor length. Keeping airflow energized prevents energy loss from surface friction. Without an effective diffuser, rear axle stability suffers, destroying driver confidence. The exposed floor demonstrates the intricate work needed even with reduced complexity.
