McLaren weighs hardware overhaul as Miami tweaks fall short

McLaren’s camp says the modest rule tweaks approved for the Miami Grand Prix will soften some of the 2026 power‑unit quirks but will not erase the underlying energy‑starved character of the new cars. Reducing energy harvesting and raising the super‑clipping limit to 350 kW should curb lifting, coasting and excessive speed taper‑off, bringing braking zones closer to pre‑2026 norms.

Team principal Andrea Stella argues that a truly meaningful gain would require hardware changes – larger battery capacity or higher ICE fuel flow – to boost mechanical output. He cautioned such revisions cannot be rolled out this season, noting any amendment to battery size or fuel allowance would need months of development and regulatory sign‑off. Such a step would also reshape the aerodynamic envelope, as more power permits different rear‑wing setups.

Technical director Mark Temple added that even with the Miami adjustments drivers will still need to manage energy carefully on ‘starved’ circuits, a scenario not unfamiliar from past fuel‑saving eras. He believes the most conspicuous inefficiencies – lift‑off and erratic power re‑application – should largely disappear, leaving only the nuanced balance of energy deployment that defines modern F1 racing, significantly overall.
