Haas F1 chief opposes cost cap hike to fix 2027 power unit woes

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu warned that raising Formula 1's budget cap to address 2027 power unit issues would undermine cost-saving efforts. The 2026 season has struggled with new hybrid regulations forcing drivers to manage battery recharge multiple times per lap, creating safety concerns from speed differentials.

F1 stakeholders are considering significant changes including a 60-40 V6-to-electric power split, achieved by increasing fuel flow and battery capacity. However, these modifications would require teams to redesign fuel tanks and potentially alter chassis designs, adding substantial costs at a time when many planned to carry over their 2026 packages.

Komatsu emphasized that any regulation changes should avoid fundamental design overhauls. He argued that increasing the budget cap by five or ten million pounds per team defeats the purpose of having financial restrictions in place, especially when the sport should be simplifying and reducing expenses across all areas.
