F1 Drops Controversial Monaco Pitstop Rule After 2025 Backlash

Formula 1 has scrapped its controversial mandatory two-stop rule for the Monaco Grand Prix after teams exploited the 2025 regulation to game the system. The rule, which required teams to use three tyre sets, was intended to create more strategic variety in the notoriously processional race but instead led to teams deliberately slowing cars to create pit windows for teammates.

The tactic drew criticism from team principals like Williams' James Vowles, who called it the 'most uncomfortable' feeling he'd experienced in F1, preferring to earn points 'on merit rather than gaming the system.' FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis confirmed the plan has been abandoned following further discussions, with all Monaco-specific tyre usage clauses deleted from the 2026 sporting regulations.

Beyond the Monaco rule change, the FIA World Motor Sport Council approved adding one minute to Q3's duration and maintaining optional cooling vests for drivers instead of making them mandatory. The cooling vest decision came after mixed feedback from drivers following their introduction in response to the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix's extreme heat conditions.
