Mercedes has identified a software anomaly within George Russell's Formula 1 power unit as the cause of performance issues he experienced between Silverstone and Spa. Russell repeatedly reported a lack of straight-line speed, confirmed by telemetry, though initial investigations ruled out power unit or top speed deficits.

The team's analysis revealed that the power unit management software was deploying electrical energy too early in the lap, creating an imbalance. This meant power available at the start of the lap had to be 'paid back' later, impacting performance in crucial sectors. A software correction has been implemented at Mercedes' Brixworth engine facility.

Mercedes believes it has pinpointed the primary cause and does not need to replace the power unit. However, confirmation of the fix will have to wait until the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, as previous tracks did not offer conditions suitable for proper evaluation. Some within the team suggest Russell's driving style might have amplified the software anomaly's effects.
