F1 Scraps Controversial Monaco Pitstop Rule After 2025 Backlash

Formula 1 has abandoned its controversial mandatory two-stop pitstop rule for the Monaco Grand Prix after the 2025 implementation sparked significant criticism. The rule, introduced to combat Monaco's notoriously difficult overtaking conditions, required teams to use three tyre sets and complete two pitstops during the race.

The strategy initially aimed to create more excitement and unpredictability in the streets of Monte Carlo. However, teams like Racing Bulls and Williams exploited the regulation by deliberately running slower cars to create pitstop windows for their teammates. Williams team boss James Vowles described feeling "the most uncomfortable I've felt" about having to game the system rather than racing on merit.

Following further discussions between the FIA and teams, the controversial clauses have been removed from the 2026 sporting regulations. The decision comes as part of broader regulatory refinements, including extending Q3 qualifying to 13 minutes and maintaining cooling vests as optional equipment rather than mandatory, addressing driver concerns about comfort and effectiveness.
