F1 Adds 5-Second Pre-Start Delay for Australian GP

Formula 1 will implement a five-second pre-start delay at the Australian Grand Prix to help drivers at the back of the grid manage their new turbocharged powertrains. The change, detailed in race directors' notes after successful testing in Bahrain, addresses concerns about slower turbo spool-up times following the removal of the MGU-H system. A flashing blue panel on the starting gantry will signal the extra preparation time.

Without the MGU-H to spin up turbos using stored energy, drivers found they needed higher revs to get their turbochargers working properly. This created sluggish starts and risked anti-stall activation for cars at the rear. The delay allows teams to build boost pressure correctly before the traditional starting lights sequence resumes. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli noted that while the blue panel helps, timing boost build-up remains crucial.

The change comes after Ferrari raised concerns about this issue months ago, reportedly developing a smaller turbo to compensate. During Bahrain practice starts, Maranello maintained an advantage as other teams fine-tuned their procedures. The Australian Grand Prix marks the first competitive application of this solution, with teams hoping to avoid the starting-line problems that plagued testing.
