McLaren Encouraged by F1 Practice Start Trials in Bahrain

McLaren has expressed encouragement after Formula 1's practice start trials in Bahrain testing showed promising results for the 2026 cars' start procedure. The FIA trialed an additional five seconds between the last car lining up and the start light sequence, addressing concerns about the laborious start procedure caused by the removal of the MGU-H from 2026 power units.

Drivers at the back of the grid can now spool up their turbos by revving engines longer, as the new regulations require different hybrid components. McLaren's technical director for performance Mark Temple noted that Wednesday night's practice starts proceeded without noteworthy issues, helping to allay fears about the procedure. The trial will continue through Thursday and Friday following discussions at the F1 Commission.

The challenges stem from teams needing to hold revs for extended periods to minimize turbo lag without the MGU-H, which previously helped spin turbos electrically. While some teams like Ferrari had optimized their turbo designs for the original procedure, McLaren believes the extended timing represents a reasonable compromise that addresses the most critical concern - giving drivers at the back of the grid sufficient time to prepare their cars before the lights go out.
