Waag Moves Bluesky Presence to European PDS for Data Control

Waag, a Dutch technology organization, migrated their Bluesky presence to Eurosky's Personal Data Server infrastructure to assert greater control over their digital footprint. Rather than relying on Bluesky's default hosting, their account data now resides on European servers through the AT Protocol's decentralized architecture.

A Personal Data Server stores user data independently from the main platform. Unlike traditional social media where accounts live on corporate servers, PDS allows users to choose their hosting provider and maintain ownership of posts, followers, and interactions. This enables seamless migration without losing digital identity, creating a federated network similar to email systems.

The move reflects growing concerns about Bluesky's centralized control despite its open-source protocol. While the AT Protocol is publicly available, Bluesky maintains decision-making power over features, feeds, and moderation. Venture capital funding further concentrates influence among shareholders rather than users. Migration through Eurosky's EU-Haul service provides an alternative aligned with European privacy values.

Waag emphasizes that true decentralization requires distributed data ownership. They continue prioritizing the Fediverse, operating their own Mastodon instance at waag.social with approximately 500 users. Until more users adopt independent PDS hosting, platform power remains concentrated among those controlling the majority of user data.
