W Social's Closed-Source Pivot Contradicts EU Digital Sovereignty Goals

W Social, a Bluesky fork positioning itself as Europe's X alternative, has quietly migrated prominent EU institutional accounts including the European Commission and its president Ursula von der Leyen. The platform promises European data hosting and identity verification to combat misinformation, but questions surround its technical implementation and transparency.

For true digital sovereignty on ATproto, operators need independent Personal Data Servers, relays, App Views, moderation services, and PLC infrastructure. While self-hosting PDS instances is accessible, running the complete stack demands substantial resources. Eurosky, operated by non-profit Modal, offers a fully open-source European alternative with transparent development and European-hosted infrastructure.

Developer scrutiny intensified when W Social removed their public GitHub repository in March, eliminating visibility into their codebase. Aral Balkan of Small Technology Foundation called this highly unusual, noting standard practice involves deprecation notices rather than silent removal. The platform's web client and mobile app sources also remain unavailable.

This shift directly contradicts the European Commission's recently unveiled Tech Sovereignty Package, which emphasizes open source alternatives and digital autonomy. Moving institutional accounts to a closed-source, for-profit entity while claiming to advance European sovereignty creates a stark contradiction that raises serious questions about the Commission's technical due diligence.
