Tech Giants' Hidden AI Debt Hits $1.65T

Hidden debt at five U.S. tech giants — Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle — has surged eightfold in four years to an estimated $1.65 trillion, exceeding the $1.35 trillion shown on balance sheets, according to a Nikkei study. This off-balance-sheet debt stems from massive AI infrastructure investments, including long-term GPU purchase agreements and data center leases not yet operational.

Meta's hidden debt stands at $420 billion, nearly triple its recorded debt. Oracle's reached $273.3 billion, a 30-fold increase, driven by its Stargate project with OpenAI. Accounting rules treat undelivered equipment and pre-operational leases as off-balance-sheet items, disclosed only in financial statement footnotes. Moody's and Morgan Stanley have flagged risks, while the Bank for International Settlements calls this "shadow borrowing."

Tech firms rely on corporate bonds, share issuance, and joint ventures with investors like Blue Owl Capital (Meta's $27 billion Louisiana data center, now exceeding $50 billion). Circular investment — where Nvidia and giants fund operators who then pay GPU/cloud fees — obscures true demand. If AI growth falters, asset values could plummet, turning hidden liabilities into real losses.
