Microsoft is moving to cancel most Claude Code licenses across its Experiences + Devices team, directing developers toward GitHub Copilot CLI instead. The company originally opened access to Anthropic's AI coding tool in December, inviting thousands of developers to experiment with it daily. The transition stems from both strategic and financial motivations. Microsoft's internal memo frames the move as a convergence around Copilot CLI as the primary agentic command line interface. However, sources indicate cost-cutting pressures ahead of the June 30 financial year-end played a role. Engineers had been using both tools to provide feedback, but strongly favored Claude Code over Microsoft's own offering.

This creates pressure on GitHub to rapidly improve Copilot CLI and close the gap with Anthropic's technology. The decision reflects Microsoft's broader challenge in competing with external AI models while promoting its own tools. Engineers must now adapt their workflows despite existing product disparities, potentially slowing productivity during the transition period.
