iOS 27 adds native pass creator to Apple Wallet

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that iOS 27 will ship a Create a Pass button inside Apple Wallet. Tapping the existing “+” now offers two paths: scan a QR code from a paper ticket or membership card, or launch a layout editor to design a pass from scratch. The entire process runs without a developer account, Pass Type ID, or certificate signing.

Inside the app, Wallet presents three color‑coded templates—Standard (orange) for generic cards, Membership (blue) for gyms or libraries, and Event (purple) for one‑off tickets. The hue not only differentiates passes visually but also mirrors the sorting logic Apple already uses. After more than a decade of requiring developers to generate .pkpass files, this consumer‑focused flow finally closes the long‑standing adoption gap.

The change threatens niche generators like WalletWallet, which previously filled the DIY niche by converting barcodes into .pkpass files. With native support, Apple may cut into that volume, but users gain a smoother, device‑first experience. iOS 27 is slated for a WWDC preview on June 8 and a public rollout in September 2026, delivering the first built‑in pass‑creation tool for iPhone.
