Grohnde battery storage systems are rising near the decommissioned nuclear plant in Lower Saxony, with three massive BESS projects from GESI, FRV, and Elements Green. The 1.4 GW initiative, potentially scaling to 1.87 GW, includes lithium iron phosphate batteries storing 3.84 GWh and 2.4 GWh respectively. RheinMainLink and SüdLink high-voltage lines nearby could enable energy trading between northern and southern Germany. Emmerthal substation, replacing the old Grohnde facility, will handle 380 kV lines and integrate with 110 kV networks. Planning delays persist, with completion expected post-2030 despite 2026 operational targets.
