Germany achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy transition in July 2026, with 12 billion kWh of solar electricity fed into the grid, a record for a single month. This figure, analyzed by the Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien (IWR) using ENTSO-E data, excludes electricity consumed on-site, meaning actual generation was higher.

During July, average midday solar output surpassed 40,000 MW, comparable to over 40 nuclear power plants. This substantial generation displaced electricity from coal and gas plants, signaling a structural shift where photovoltaics are becoming a pillar of Germany's supply, driven by decades of investment. Dr. Norbert Allnoch, CEO of the IWR, emphasized the need for informed discussions on renewable energy support.

The IWR clarified the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) uses a differential cost model. Solar electricity is sold on the market, and the EEG compensates for the difference between the market price and the statutory feed-in tariff. For newer systems, this compensation is often minimal, especially when market prices are high. Current EEG costs are largely influenced by older installations from 2010-2013 with higher tariffs, which are set to expire between 2030 and 2033, promising significant future reductions in historical EEG costs.
