For the first time in 2025, Germany's electricity generation saw wind and solar power surpass fossil fuels. Together, renewables produced 225 terawatt hours (TWh), accounting for 44% of the total, while fossil fuels generated 217 TWh (43%). This significant milestone aligns with the EU's overall trend, which also experienced renewables overtaking fossil fuels in the same year.

This shift is a direct result of two decades of robust growth in solar and onshore wind, driven by Germany's "Energiewende" strategy, aimed at phasing out both coal and nuclear power. The country has ambitious targets, including 115 gigawatts (GW) of onshore wind by 2030 and achieving economy-wide net-zero emissions by 2045.

Despite challenges such as the nuclear phaseout and the ongoing reliance on coal (with a phaseout deadline of 2038), Germany is pushing forward. While opposition from the far-right AfD exists, and new gas-fired power plants are being developed as a bridge technology, the government remains committed to its renewable energy goals. A review of timelines in August will be crucial in assessing Berlin's commitment to its climate targets.
