Paul Feng, VP of Product Management at Google Play, announced the global expansion of the Play Age Signals API, a privacy-preserving tool allowing parents to share their child's age range (e.g., 16-17) directly with apps. Building on current availability in Brazil, the rollout begins in Australia and Canada by mid-August, with full global deployment by end of year.

The API puts parents in control via the Google Family Link app, letting them choose whether to share age ranges. If shared, all Play apps using the API receive signals to tailor content, features, and settings appropriately. Age ranges are never shared by default, and parents can update or disable settings anytime.

Developers gain flexibility to integrate safety signals based on their app's nature — a weather app needs different protections than entertainment apps. The API complements existing safety tools like Restrict Minor Access in Play Console and Family Link's screen-time limits, PIN-based filters, and download approvals.
