Google is expanding its beta Play Age Signals API to address increasing global demands for online age verification, particularly concerning app stores. This system aims to allow developers to verify user ages without compromising privacy, by integrating with Google's existing Family Link app. Parents can set dynamic age ranges for their children's managed accounts, enabling apps to tailor content and experiences accordingly. This feature is opt-in and can be disabled at any time.

The Play Age Signals API was initially tested late last year as several US states, including Texas, Louisiana, and Utah, began enacting laws that place age verification responsibilities on app stores. While organizations like the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) have opposed such legislation, the US Supreme Court's recent decision has allowed the Texas law to proceed, making Google's privacy-focused solution increasingly relevant for developers.
