Nathan Fillion has announced a Firefly animated reboot in early development at 20th Television Animation, ending a week of social media teases. The actor revealed the news in an Instagram video alongside original cast members at Awesome Con, where he confirmed the project has a completed script and early concept art.

Developed through Fillion's Collision33 production banner, the animated series will be showrun by married writers Tara Butters and Marc Guggenheim in their first professional collaboration. The project partners with Oscar- and Emmy-winning studio ShadowMachine and has received Joss Whedon's blessing. The series will explore events between the original 2002 TV run and the 2005 film Serenity.

The announcement came during a panel and live podcast taping with co-star Alan Tudyk and original cast members Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau. The project is expected to be taken to buyers soon, marking the cult sci-fi franchise's return after years of fan demand.
