California Judge Blocks Kars4Kids Car Donation Ads Over Misleading Claims

Kars4Kids must cease broadcasting its iconic jingle ads in California after a judge found them deceptive. The charity's TV and radio spots, featuring children singing repetitive tunes, failed to disclose that most proceeds fund Oorah, a New Jersey Jewish organization rather than underprivileged kids broadly. The ruling stems from a lawsuit by a California donor who felt misled after contributing his Volvo.

Judge Gassia Apkarian determined the ads violated state false advertising and unfair competition laws. Internal testimony revealed $45 million annually (60% of donations) supports Oorah, which also operates programs in Israel. Another 30% funds advertising itself, creating what the judge called a misleading cycle of extreme repetition without substantive disclosure.

The lawsuit was filed by Bruce Puterbaugh, who donated a nonworking Volvo in 2021 expecting to help local California children. He discovered the funds benefited a Northeast-based religious organization instead. Judge Apkarian ordered Kars4Kids to pay him $250 for his vehicle's fair market value.

The decision reinforces donor transparency requirements for charitable solicitations. Organizations cannot create memorable impressions while omitting material facts about beneficiary demographics and religious affiliations.
