Second complete fruit fly brain map completed

Researchers have completed a second full connectome map of a fruit fly brain, this time of a male Drosophila. The project, a collaboration between the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus and Google, maps every neuron and over 300 million synaptic connections. This follows an earlier map of a female fly and serves to refine imaging and analysis tools for increasingly complex nervous systems.

The connectome acts as a foundational catalog, detailing each neuron's location and its connections, which dictate how sensory inputs are processed and transformed into outputs like memory or movement. Mapping the fly's roughly 150,000 neurons and hundreds of millions of synapses is a task impossible for humans to complete manually, requiring advanced computer vision and machine learning. The effort aims to provide neurobiologists with a critical tool for understanding brain function, building on the historical challenge of mapping even simpler organisms like C. elegans, which initially required manual tracing.
