Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka expressed gratitude for the LeBron James era during a season-opening news conference Thursday, stating the star's departure to the Philadelphia 76ers was "done amicably." Pelinka, speaking alongside Lakers coach JJ Redick, reflected on James' eight-year tenure in L.A., which included a championship and a Western Conference Finals appearance.

"The Lakers have become -- as they should -- a perennial playoff team," Pelinka said. "It was a great era, and we're grateful for it. I think it's important to say that at the onset as we turn into a new chapter."

James' agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, informed the Lakers approximately eight hours before free agency officially began on June 30. This marked a reversal from James' public comments during NBA All-Star weekend in February 2024, when he stated, "I am a Laker and I'm happy and been very happy being a Laker the last six years."

Pelinka praised James' professionalism and described the offseason communications as "diplomatic, professionally and honestly." Redick, James' former "Mind the Game" podcast co-host, did not directly address the departure but showed support by attending James' podcast taping in New York in July. Redick also endorsed the Lakers' current roster, saying, "probably the first time in my three years here that I feel like the pieces actually fit together."
