The New York Yankees are placing second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the injured list with a sprained right thumb, manager Aaron Boone announced Wednesday. Chisholm injured the thumb sliding headfirst into second base attempting to stretch a single into a double in the eighth inning of Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. He remained in the game but exited after making a throw to first in the ninth. Tests revealed a sprain requiring Chisholm to be shut down from baseball activities for seven to 10 days, potentially sidelining him through the end of the regular season.

Chisholm, 28, had been enjoying his best stretch of a disappointing season, batting .391 with a 1.028 OPS over his previous 15 games. Overall, he is slashing .232/.312/.403 with 19 home runs and 40 stolen bases in 134 games with free agency looming this winter. Boone called the injury a "definite blow" given Chisholm's recent form.

The Yankees plan to recall Anthony Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. Volpe, the starting shortstop the previous three seasons, is batting .292 with 10 home runs and a 1.051 OPS in 28 games since his demotion. Jose Caballero started at second base Wednesday, while Amed Rosario and Luis Garcia Jr. are other internal options. Garcia, acquired from the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline, has 28 home runs and a .542 slugging percentage this season.
