Freckle Smartphone Gets Kids Outside

The New York City-based startup Freckle is launching a small smartphone for kids aged seven to 13 that aims to keep them connected to parents while encouraging outdoor exploration. The $199 device (plus a $25 monthly cellular subscription) runs on a simplified platform called "Clay OS" with no app store, open web, streaming apps, or social media.\n\nKids can take pictures for AI descriptions, ask questions, use a mini-map for navigation, communicate via walkie-talkie with nearby Freckles, and make tap-to-pay purchases. Parents control who their children can call and text, and can create "Quests" to encourage outdoor activities.

The device has a 3.1-inch screen and is built to withstand child usage.\n\nFounder and CEO Sam Terris says Freckle aims to give kids freedom while keeping them connected, contrasting with fear-based GPS trackers. The device is best suited for walkable cities like New York, but could also be useful in museums and parks. As an alternative to smartphones or smartwatches, Freckle offers navigation and communication tailored for independent play.
