watchOS 27 removes the double-click Digital Crown gesture that previously allowed quick switching between the current app and the last used app on Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3. The shortcut also worked between the watch face and the previous app, enabling fast context switching without touching the display.

The gesture was repurposed for Live Rewind, a new Audio Intelligence feature exclusive to Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. Live Rewind provides a 15-second transcript of spoken audio and is invoked by double-clicking the Digital Crown. Older models will not support Live Rewind, yet they still lose the multitasking shortcut — the double-click now simply opens the dynamic app grid, duplicating the single-click action.

Critics note the change is unsatisfying for users on unsupported hardware and those who may not want Live Rewind. Apple has not indicated plans to restore the gesture via settings, though future updates like watchOS 27.1 or 27.2 could address feedback. Apple Watch Series 12 is available for pre-order from $399, and Ultra 4 from $799, both launching September 18.
