A judge will hold an inquiry Friday into a single holdout juror preventing a verdict in the Lindsay Clancy triple-murder trial in Massachusetts. The jury has deliberated for roughly 36 hours over seven days but remains deadlocked on whether Clancy, 36, is legally responsible for strangling her three children in January 2023. Lead defense lawyer Kevin Reddington said the jury foreperson sent Judge William Sullivan a note stating the juror refuses to "listen to law" on reasonable doubt.

Sullivan questioned jurors individually Thursday and re-instructed them on the legal standard but denied Reddington's request to remove the juror, calling it "a sensitive undertaking." The case has divided public opinion over criminal responsibility versus postpartum psychosis. Clancy's lawyers argue she killed her children while suffering from postpartum psychosis; prosecutors allege she plotted the killings while her husband was away. The jury of nine women and three men can convict of murder or manslaughter, or find her not guilty by reason of insanity.

A mistrial would force prosecutors to decide whether to retry Clancy, who remains institutionalized.
