Agility Robotics has unveiled its Digit 5 humanoid robot, designed to work safely near humans without physical cages or safety barriers. When it detects a person, the robot can move away, stand still, or even squat to avoid harm. "The robot was designed with a complex safe motion system," said CTO Pras Velagapudi. Early access is expected in the first half of 2027, with general availability by year's end. Agility is retooling its Robo Fab facility in Salem, Oregon.

The company became the first to deploy humanoid robots in full-time commercial operations at a GXO warehouse in Atlanta in 2024. Earlier Digit versions have accumulated over 65,000 hours in warehouses and factories across North America. Clients include GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada. Safety has been a "blocker for everybody," said cofounder Jonathan Hurst.

Digit 5 uses AI algorithms and multimodal sensors, including vision-based sensors, and runs on Nvidia's Thor IGX hardware with the Nvidia Halos for Robotics system. Agility also participated in developing an international safety standard, ISO 25785-1, under committee review.
