Google Maps users in the U.S. will now see "Lake America" instead of "Lake Ontario" for the Great Lake straddling the New York—Ontario border. Google said it made this change after the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) updated the name, following an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump last week. Google Maps users in Canada will still see "Lake Ontario" only, while users outside the U.S. and Canada will see both names displayed as "Lake Ontario (Lake America)."

Apple Maps has not yet been updated and continues to show "Lake Ontario" worldwide. When the GNIS renamed the "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America" last year, Apple Maps rolled out the change one day after Google Maps, suggesting it may follow suit soon for this update as well.
