After failing to convert a match point in the third-set tie-break and missing a chance to serve out victory in the fourth, Gea fell 3-6 6-7 (0-7) 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 in five hours and 13 minutes — the fourth longest match in US Open history. Gea, ranked 87, entered via qualifying after Casper Ruud's withdrawal and beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Zachary Svajda, and Michael Zheng to reach the last 16.

He earns $480,000 in prize money. Van de Zandschulp advances to face Alexander Zverev, who defeated Luciano Darderi 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-3) to reach the quarter-finals. Earlier, Belgium's Alexander Blockx overcame rib pain to beat Francisco Cerundolo 6-3 4-6 7-5 7-5, becoming the first Belgian man to reach the US Open quarter-finals.
