Apple Maps has updated its U.S. display to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America" following pressure from President Donald Trump and a formal change in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). The move places Apple Maps in the center of a trade disagreement between the United States and Canada. After being contacted by the White House, Apple implemented the change, which mirrors a similar update already made by Google Maps. U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed on August 31 that Trump spoke directly to Apple about the renaming. Searches for Lake Ontario now show "Lake America" in results, though a brief interim period displayed the new name in search while retaining the original on the map.

This follows the January 2025 renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, where Apple initially resisted but eventually complied. Visibility of that change varied globally: users in Mexico saw the original name, while others saw both names. The Lake America rollout is in early stages but will likely follow a similar region-based approach. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has publicly opposed the change, unveiling a Lake Ontario sign near Grimsby, Ontario, highlighting the cross-border tension.
