Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America

Apple has officially begun renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America" on Apple Maps for users in the United States, following an executive order from President Donald Trump. According to Bloomberg, the lake will retain its original name for Canadian users, while international users will see both monikers.

President Trump, who is also managing escalating trade tensions with Canada and ongoing conflicts involving Iran, reportedly reached out directly to Apple to ensure the change. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed Trump's direct involvement, as reported by Reuters on Monday.

The update is still rolling out, with desktop versions already showing "Lake America" while mobile apps display both names. This follows a similar precedent earlier this year when Google and Apple both renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" after a separate executive order.

Not all map services have complied. MapQuest, which saw a surge in popularity after announcing it would not rename Lake Ontario, became the top navigation app in the App Store, reflecting public interest in the controversy.
