Windows 11 January 2026 Update Causes Black Screens, Outlook Bugs

Microsoft's first Patch Tuesday of 2026 has created widespread disruption for Windows 11 users. The KB5074109 update, released January 13 for versions 24H2 and 25H2, was meant to deliver critical security fixes. Instead, it's causing sudden black screens, locked Outlook installations, and broken connections to Azure Virtual Desktop.

The problems affect both home PCs and enterprise servers. Users report desktops freezing for a second before recovering, with the glitch appearing on both NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards. Some found temporary relief by toggling DisplayPort settings. Outlook Classic users with POP accounts face a frustrating bug where the app appears closed but the process lingers, requiring manual termination via Task Manager.

Enterprise environments were hit harder, with Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 customers experiencing complete authentication failures. Microsoft issued emergency out-of-band patches on January 17, but organizations must install them manually from the Update Catalog. This follows a pattern of problematic Windows 11 updates in 2025, raising questions about the platform's testing pipeline.
