Panic, the indie developer behind the yellow-cranked Playdate handheld, is issuing refunds to customers who paid Trump-era import taxes. The refunds follow a February Supreme Court ruling declaring the tariffs illegal and ordering the administration to refund affected companies. In a help site update, Panic confirmed it has "begun to receive refunds of the tariffs we paid in the last year" and has consequently "refunded all tariffs charged to customers." Initially, Panic could not absorb the 19 percent tariffs due to low margins on the Playdate, passing the cost to customers as a subtotal line item.

Unlike Nintendo, which cited "market conditions," Panic absorbed the financial burden to avoid raising retail prices. Cabel Sasser of Panic stated that filing paperwork and processing the refunds required significant backend work, but returning the money was a "no-brainer." He emphasized that keeping the funds "was not our money to keep" and felt good to return it to purchasers. The move highlights Panic's commitment to customers amid trade policy disputes.
