Valve Steam Frame Verified Ratings Begin with Portal 2 Update

Valve's Steam Frame VR headset launch appears imminent as the company rolls out its Frame Verified rating system. Portal 2 received a June 29 update adding compatibility information, earning a "Playable" rating but falling short of full Frame Verified status. The update also resolved Linux launch issues, suggesting active preparation for the hardware's debut.

According to Valve's published specifications, games need to run at 90 FPS for VR titles and 30 FPS for 2D titles at 1280 × 720 resolution while maintaining legible UI at the Frame's native resolution. Portal 2 missed verified status because it doesn't render at this native resolution, despite being functional on the controllers.

Notably, Half-Life: Alyx — Valve's own VR-exclusive title — hasn't received similar compatibility updates yet. This raises questions about the company's own game readiness for its headset. The Frame Verified badge hasn't appeared on Steam's storefront, though SteamDB lists compatibility data for interested users.

These ratings will help consumers identify which games work properly with the upcoming Steam Frame hardware. Valve's systematic approach mirrors console certification processes, potentially reducing buyer uncertainty in the VR market.
